Eulogio "Leo" Gallegos

Eulogio “Leo” Gallegos, 81 of Fort Sumner, NM passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013 at his home following an illness. Leo was born February 3, 1932 in Amarillo, TX to the home of Merenciano Gallegos and the former Manuelita Chavez. He Married Eva Lucero on March 6, 1952 in Clovis, NM. Leo enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 28, 1951 and served 20 years until his retirement on October 31, 1971 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. His citations and commendations include the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star; Bronze Star Medal; Oak Leaf Cluster to National Defense Service Medal; Sharpshooter; Army Commendation Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Following his honorable discharge, Leo and Eva made their home in Clovis for many years where Leo was employed as a mechanic for Clovis Schools, he also worked as a Custodial Supervisor for Clovis Schools and drove the Clovis Band Activities Bus. He retired from the Clovis Schools in 1993. Leo and Eva made their home in Fort Sumner in 1994. Leo was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner, V.F.W. Post 315 and American Legion Post 25 of Clovis, Knights of Columbus Council 8331 in Fort Sumner, lifetime member of Army Enlisted Association. Leo enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and for many years volunteered his time to maintain the grounds at St. Anthony Cemetery. Leo is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Jose Gallegos and Santiago Mares, a sister Maria Tere Amarillas, and a daughter in law Brenda Lee Gallegos. Survivors include his wife Eva Gallegos of the home in Fort Sumner, four daughters Virginia and husband Robert “Bob” Marbut of Plattsburth, NY, Patricia and husband Christopher Romero, Caroline Hall, and Linda Sue and husband Daryl Holdridge all of Clovis, NM; four sons Eulogio “Ralph” Gallegos Jr. of Clovis, NM, Charles Ray Gallegos of Stanley, VA, Carl “TooTall” Gallegos of Fort Sumner, and Richard Gonzales of Clovis, NM; two brothers Lupe Gallegos and wife Flora of Fort Sumner, and Ricardo Gallegos and wife Rosa of Clovis, NM. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and many dear friends. Visitation hours will be Tuesday from 11am to 6pm at the funeral home. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, First & Richards Street, Fort Sumner, NM. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at the church; Father Sotero A. Sena will officiate. Military honors will follow. Burial will be at Fort Sumner Cemetery.Pallbearers will include Eulogio “Ralph” Gallegos Jr., Andreas Romero, Daryl Holdridge, Emilio Romero, Isaiah Roybal, and Matthew Gallegos.
