Services for Hollis Ray Duke, 77 of Lubbock, Texas will be held at 11:00 am (C.S.T.) Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at The Fellowship, 9417 W. Fourth St, Lubbock, TX with Pastor Dan Chrestman officiating. Graveside services will follow at 3:00 pm (M.S.T.) at Fort Sumner Cemetery, Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Military honors will be provided by Cannon Air Force Base Honor Guard. Pallbearers will include Billy Duke Jr., Rowdy Jones, Kenny Jones, Cale Mello, Shayne Smith, Leslie Crandell, Kenny Hershman, and Collin Cobb. Honorary bearers will include Bill Duke, Joe Cox, Gerald Don Cortese, Kent Cundy, Charlie Madgwick, Robbie Robinette, and Chris Madgwick. Hollis Ray Duke was born April 26, 1936 in Littlefield, Texas to the home of W.T. and Annie (Fowler) Duke. He passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Lubbock Heart Hospital following an illness. Hollis attended elementary school in Littlefield, TX and junior high and high school at Fort Sumner, NM. Hollis married Janet Lee Farmer on December 25, 1955 at the First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner, NM. Hollis served in the U.S. Air Force for 28 years, the first seven years as an Aircraft Propulsion Superintendent and 21 years as a Jet Engine Technician. He served during the Vietnam War and traveled extensively in the Far East to include Vietnam, Okinawa and Thailand. He was dedicated to his country. His duty stations included Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, NM, Misawa, Japan, Wichita Falls, TX, Portsmouth, NH, Anderson AFB in Guam, Clark AFB Philippines, RAFB Lubbock, TX, and Iceland. He retired at Reese AFB in Lubbock in 1982. His citations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Following his military retirement, Hollis was employed with Lockheed Martin as a Support Systems, Jet Engine Mechanic. While he was stationed in Japan, Hollis loved to take photographs, which he developed and printed. He also collected gem stones that he polished and finished. He loved bowling and held many offices during his bowling league days. He was a Booster Club President at Frenship High School. Mostly Hollis loved his family, he was always involved in their activities and was completely eaten up with love from his grandchildren and their activities. He loved going to football and basketball games. He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Janet Duke. Hollis was a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner and The Fellowship in Lubbock, Texas. Hollis is preceded in death by his wife Janet Lee Duke on June 15, 2013, his parents W.T. and Annie Duke, two brothers Carl and Cecil Duke, two sisters Edith and Ruth Duke and a niece Beth Duke Sparks. He is survived by a loving family including his daughter Cindy Duke Madgwick and her husband Charlie of Lubbock ,TX, a son Billy R. Duke of Lubbock, former daughter-in-law Sherry Duke of Lubbock, five grandchildren Jimmy Michell, Billy Duke Jr., Ashley Duke, and Chaleigh Duke all of Lubbock, and Chris (Elizabeth) Madgwick of Waldo, WI, five great-grandchildren Gracie, Jayton, Adison, and Rylon Michell, and Teddy Madgwick, a brother Bill Duke and his wife JoAnn of Fort Sumner, along with nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.
