Mabel Chavez, age 83, of Tucumcari, NM passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on May 18, 2014. Mabel was born November 13, 1930 in Canyon Largo, NM to the home of Alfredo and Grabielita (Maes) Herrera. Mabel was a member of the Legion of Mary in Mosquero, NM. She enjoyed sewing, listening to music, dancing, entertaining her family and friends and rearing her grandchildren. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be truly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Felimon Chavez, her son Frank Chavez, grandsons Joseph Chavez, Agustin Montiel, granddaughter April Elam, great grandsons Johnny Ruben Chavez and Bradley W. Schumaecher. Survivors include her children, Joe Chavez and wife Verla of Portales, Sonny Chavez and wife Dorothy of Las Vegas, NV, Felimon Chavez Jr. and wife Juanita of Amarillo, TX, Alfred Chavez of Hutchinson, KS, Robert Chavez of Tucumcari, Ruben Chavez and wife Sylvia of Tucumcari, Charlie Chavez and wife Bertha of Tucumcari, Phillip Chavez of Tucumcari, Danny Chavez and wife Stella of Rio Rancho, Rocky Chavez and wife Gina of Tucumcari, Mae Hughes and husband Michael of Fort Worth, TX, Ruby Sandoval and husband Danny of Las Vegas, NV and Charlotte Chavez Marquart and husband Scott of Tucumcari. Also surviving are her sisters and brother Amalia Sandoval and husband Arthur of Cimmarron, NM, Amelia Sena of Solano, NM, Laura Garcia and husband Raymond of Dalhart, TX, Adelina Garcia of Amarillo and Alfredo Herrera and wife Georgia of Solano NM, 32 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren along with her dog Snowball and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Friday, May 30, 2014 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Tucumcari, NM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Saturday, May 31, 2014 with burial of cremains to follow at Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery. Father Hyginus Anuta will officiate. A reception will follow the services at Hammond Hall. All services for Mrs. Chavez have been entrusted to the Chavez Funeral Home of Santa Rosa.
