Helena Moore

Helena Moore, a resident at the La Villa Care Center in Roswell, NM, passed away November 6, 2014, at the age of 103 years, 6 months and 21 days. She was born to Abraham Loewen and Ella (Poppenga) Loewen on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1911, in Ellis County, Oklahoma. She attended rural schools in Ellis County and high school in Higgins, Texas. She and Leonard Moore, who lived on a neighboring farm, were married on July 10, 1928. They both retired from the Santa Fe Railroad after working many years as managers of the Santa Fe Reading Room in Waynoka, Oklahoma. After Leonard passed away on January 3, 1987, Helena moved to Ft. Sumner, New Mexico, where she lived until moving to Assisted Living in Roswell. Helena became a Christian at an early age and at the time of her death was a member of the First Baptist Church, Roswell. She was always interested in and supported missions. She helped sponsor and cooked for campers from her first church, First Baptist, Higgins, Texas, where she also taught Sunday School and many times led the singing. She is survived by their son, Norman Moore of Ft. Sumner, New Mexico, and daughter, Margaret (Moore) Knox, and her husband, Marvin Knox, of Marlow, Oklahoma. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Dana (Moore) Smith and her husband, David, of Roswell; Sheryl (Moore) Cones and her husband, Mickey, of Ft. Sumner; Nathan Moore and his wife, Nancy, of Rosamond, California; Janell (Moore) Ball and her husband, Dennis, of Castle Rock, Colorado; Marv Knox and his wife, Joanna, of Coppell, Texas; and Martin Knox and his wife, Valorie, of Rochester, Minnesota. She is survived by 15 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are nephews, Max Holder and his wife, Carol, of Vancouver, Washington; Raymond Loewen and his wife, Margaret, of Sanger, California, and other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, a granddaughter, Martha (Knox) Scott; great-grandson, Caleb Moore; daughter-in-law, Delores (Fechner) Moore; brother, Ollie Loewen and sister, Edith (Loewen) Holder. Graveside services will be held at a later date at the Higgins, Texas, cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 830 N. Fifth Street, Fort Sumner, NM. (575) 355-2311.
