Ruth Lowman Hendley

Ruth Lowman Hendley, 82, a longtime De Baca County resident, died Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at home in Lubbock, Texas, following an illness. Ruth was born November 27, 1931 in Ft. Sumner, N.M., to the home of Roy “Poley” Lowman and Clemmie Potter Lowman. She was reared, attended school and graduated from Ft. Sumner High School. She married Ab Hendley on May 29, 1949 at the Church of Christ in Fort Sumner, N.M. Ruth worked and served many friends through her employment at Citizens Bank of Clovis, N.M., in Ft. Sumner. Ruth was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Fort Sumner Church of Christ, and a past 4-H leader. She enjoyed gardening, music, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking pictures, and keeping photo albums. She was always fond of the cowboy way of life. Her kitchen served hundreds of hungry cowboys and many fine calf ropers throughout the years. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Ab Hendley, her parents Roy “Poley” Lowman and Clemmie Potter Lowman, brother Bill Lowman and grandson Sammy Hendley, sister June Brackin, sister-in-law Alona Lowman, and brother-in-law A.J. Killough. Survivors include her sister Bea Killough of Fort Sumner, N.M., and brother in law Bill Brackin of San Antonio, Texas; four sons Ab Hendley Jr. and wife Deb of Friona, Texas, Rick Hendley and wife Cam of Rocksprings, Texas, Roy Don Hendley and wife Carole of Lubbock, Texas, and Scott Hendley and wife Gretchen of Abilene, Texas; seven grandchildren Roy Tate Hendley and wife Katie of Idalou, Texas, Sarah Collier and husband John B of Weatherford, Texas, Glynn Hendley and wife Paige of Rocksprings, Texas, Shay Sipe and husband Chad of Abilene, Texas, Christie Bohlender and husband T.J. of Amarillo, Texas, Sloan Hendley of Abilene, Texas, and Kimberly Hendley of Amarillo, Texas; and nine wonderful great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Fort Sumner Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, November 28 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Chavez funeral home. Pallbearers will be Ruth’s grandsons Roy Tate Hendley, Glynn Hendley, Sloan Hendley, as well as the husbands of Ruth’s granddaughters, T.J. Bohlender, Chad Sipe and John B Collier V. Honorary bearers will include Pow Carter, Doug Johnson, Jim Koontz and a host of other relatives and many good friends. The family prefers memorial contributions to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 180, Fort Sumner, NM 88119, the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, 1356 New Mexico 236, Portales, NM 88130, or a charity of choice.
