June 27, 1921 — February 25, 2015

June Mayo, 94 a longtime Fort Sumner business owner passed away Wednesday evening, February 24, 2015 at Retirement Ranch in Clovis. She was born June 27, 1921 in Carrol County, Missouri to the home of Earl Clifton and Pearl Charity (Smith) Griffith. She was raised in TorC, NM where she attended and graduated from high school. She married Cecil Mayo on September 1, 1942 in Phoenix, AZ.  They made their home in Fort Sumner in 1956 and opened the Dariland Drive-In on west Sumner avenue a business they operated for many years. For many Fort Sumner teenagers this was their first job opportunity. Cecil and June also upholstered and refinished furniture. Cecil and June enjoyed square dancing and were members of Pecos Kids Square Dance, Star Light Swingers of Portales, and were members of the Hall of Fame NM Square Dance Association. Cecil and June joined the Church on The Hill in 1980. June is preceded in death by her husband Cecil in 2005, her parents, a brother Earl Clifton Griffith, and two brothers in law Lawrence Durbin, Roy Mayo, and a nephew Steve Mayo. Survivors include a son Clifton Mayo and wife Cristina of Dallas, TX, daughter Judy Bell and husband Jim of Fort Sumner, a sister Nancy Durbin of Bucyrus, MO, a sister in law Lela Mayo of Ruidoso Downs, grandchildren Tandela Sena and husband Ronald of Ruidoso, Chad Wahe of Fort Sumner, Cristal Wahe of Denver, CO, great-grandchildren Evan Sena of U.S. Navy, stationed in Japan, Amber Sena of Rio Rancho, Cody Wahe of Lubbock, TX, Shaiann Thunderheart of Portales, and TaiMora Gilbert of Denver, CO. Also surviving is a niece Marvetta Mayo of Ruidoso Downs and four nieces and nephews of the Durbin family in Missouri. Visitation hours will be Friday, March 6, 2015 from 1pm to 6pm at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 1pm Saturday, March 7, 2015 at The Church on The Hill with Pastor Anna Teeter-Gentile officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Chad Wahe, Cristal Wahe, Cody Wahe, Juan Nieto, Bobby Russ, David Vansickle, Steve Gallegos, and Ross Nealey. The family requests memorial contributions in memory of June Mayo to The Church on The Hill, P.O. Box 367, Fort Sumner, NM or the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association, P.O.
