Chuck Arthur Hafdell

Charles "Chuck" Hafdell, 71 of Fort Sumner, NM passed away Monday, March 2, 2015 at his home following an illness. He was born January 16, 1944 in San Diego, California to the home of George A. and Arliene (Johnson) Hafdell.  Chuck grew up in California, he attended Mt. Miguel High School where he graduated in 1963. Chuck served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era. He worked as an automotive and airplane mechanic for many years. He made his home in Fort Sumner in 1984 and operated an auto repair shop east of Fort Sumner. He joined the Valley Fire Department where he worked his way up the ranks as a firefighter, Captain, Assistant Chief, Chief and Line Chief of the volunteer department. He was a member of the Firefighters Support Group. Chuck also enjoyed attending car shows and took his Model A pickup to many events. He spent many hours working in his shop, and keeping up with his yardwork.Chuck is preceded in death by his parents.He is survived by his wife Cheryl Hafdell of Fort Sumner, three children, a son Duane Hafdell of Santee, CA, two daughters Lisa Murphy and husband Kevin of Santee, CA, and Crystal Spence and husband Kevin of Spanaway, WA, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, four sisters DeeAnne Hodson and husband Cass of Descanso, CA, Eleanor Hafdell, of Willow, Alaska, Evelyn Brown, and Donna Tesseneer of Sylacauga, Alabama along with many nieces, nephews other family and many friends.Graveside services will be held at 10am Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Fort Sumner Cemetery with Rev. Craig Hodson officiating. The family and participating fire departments will gather at the funeral home for a procession to the cemetery at 9:45 am. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Valley Fire Department. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.Following the graveside ceremony, a reception will be held at the Valley Fire Station.Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 830 N. Fifth Street, Fort Sumner, NM (575) 355-2311.
