Anselmo Sanchez

Longtime Santa Rosa resident and World War II Veteran Anselmo “Chemo” Sanchez has died at the age of 98. He died of natural causes on May 19, 2015 at Santa Rosa’s Community Services Assisted Living Program where he resided at the time of his death. Anselmo was born on April, 1917 in Dahlia, NM and made Santa Rosa his home after his discharge from the Army at the end of World War II. After settling in Santa Rosa he operated a small grocery store for a couple of years before going to work as a produce manager for two of Santa Rosa’s better known grocery stores, Square Deal Market and Al Allen’s. Besides serving stateside in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a Military Policeman from 1942 to 1945, Anselmo also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 to 1937. He is preceded in death by his wife Maria Josefa “Josie” (Nelson) Sanchez, his parents Rodolfo and Marcelina (Sisneros) Sanchez, his grandchildren, Troy Pino and Mariah Sanchez, his brother and sisters, Benny Sanchez, Anne Casaus, Celia Pino, Pelagia Garcia and his son in law Arturo Sandoval. Survivors include all his children, Antonio and wife Lucy (Romero) of Santa Rosa, Mary Ann (Sanchez) and her husband Dennis Weide of Littleton, CO, Mamye (Sanchez) Sandoval of Santa Rosa, Gerald Sanchez of Las Cruces, Geraldine (Sanchez) Nelson of Albuquerque, Evelyn (Sanchez) and husband George Griego of Santa Rosa, Rudolph “Rudy” Sanchez of Santa Rosa, Bernadette “Berna” (Sanchez) and husband Malcolm Foster of Brunswick, ME, Lorraine (Sanchez) and husband Nick Kavanaugh of Santa Fe and Michael and wife Kim (Sanchez) Sanchez of Santa Rosa. Also surviving are his sisters, Agnes (Sanchez) Sanchez of Las Cruces and Terry (Sanchez) Gallegos of Santa Rosa along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Anselmo has been cremated in accordance with his wishes and the Sanchez family thanks all those who have been so helpful, including the staffs at the Guadalupe County Hospital, the Senior Community Services Assisted Living Program, Helping Hands Hospice and Chris Griego. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 13, at 11:00 AM from St. Rose of Lima Church with Father Sotero A. Sena Officiating.
