Edgar Lay Powell, 71 a prominent Fort Sumner, NM businessman left his life on earth at 1:20 A.M., Tuesday, August 01, 2000 at his home north of Fort Sumner following an short illness. Edgar was born September 27, 1928 in Colorado City, Texas to the home of Earl Baylor Powell and the former Jane Attaway Bounds. He was reared at Stanton, TX. He received his education at Shriner Military Institute, Austin High, Lampasas High, University of the South in Sewanee, TN, and the University of New Mexico. Edgar served as a Captain in the U.S. Army, he was a graduate of the Anti Aircraft Artillery and Missile School at Fort Bliss, TX and a graduate of the Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, OK. He served several years in the U.S. Army Reserves where he held the rank of Colonel. Edgar was a member of D.O.C.A. (Defense Organization Civilian Association) his travels included military bases throughout North America, South America and Asia. Edgar was active in local organizations including the Rotary Club where he served as President, Fraternal Order of Eagles, member of Mt. Moriah Lodge #54 in Fort Sumner, a Shriner, Kappa Sigma Fraternity a Trustee and Regent at University of the South, in Sewanee, TN, and he also served at President of Wetback Airlines. Edgar was a longtime De Baca County rancher and entrepreneur; he served as President of Earl Powell, Inc., Chairman, President and C.E.O. of Innovation Industries, and President of Borica Oil, Inc. Edgar married Christine Anne Martin on July 26, 1993 at Socorro, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jane Attaway Bounds Powell, and his father Earl Baylor Powell. Survivors include his wife Christine A. Powell of Fort Sumner; a daughter Majel Lee Fones and husband Michael of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, a son Edgar Lay Powell, II of Ruidoso, NM; one sister Earle Bursum and husband Holm of Socorro, NM. Interment will be in the family plot, Fort Worth, Texas. Memorials may be sent, in Edgar’s memory to the Dupont Library, c/o University of the South, 735 University Ave., Sewanee, TN 37383-1000.
