Ward E. Thomson, 58 a resident of Fort Sumner died Wednesday, December 1, 1999 at his home in Fort Sumner following an illness. Ward was born July 19, 1941 in Corona, NM to the home of Archie Chancey Thomson and the former Geneva Merle Jenkins. He was reared and attended schools in Corona graduating in 1959. He also attended Eastern New Mexico University. He married Inita “Inky” Carnell on February 22, 1961. Ward was employed for 10 years with Chevron Oil Company at Albuquerque; he later operated a Chevron service station on the Laguna Reservation for 14 years. He made his home in Fort Sumner in 1977 where he owned and operated the Fort Sumner Hardware Store until 1988. Ward worked as an independent truck driver and later drove for A.D.S. for five years. Ward enjoyed Drag Racing , he was a past member of the National Hot Rod Association and a member of the Roswell Drag Race Association. He raced in NM and Texas. He was also a member of Fort Sumner Bowling Leagues and a past member of the Fort Sumner Lions Club. He enjoyed working on automobiles and woodworking. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Inky Thomson of the home; two sons Perry and wife Sherry Thomson of Roswell; Timothy and wife Melissa Thomson of Fort Sumner; a sister Wanda and husband Butch Carnell of Fort Sumner; six grandchildren, Michael, Chancey, and Kayla of Fort Sumner, Fawn, Desiree, and Holly of Roswell, also surviving are three nephews, Leslie, Brett, and Gregg Carnell, two nieces, Cheri Sapp, and Cristi Props. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 4, 1999 from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sherman Martin officiating. Burial followed at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Martz, Joe Mitchell, Bob Addison, Billy Wertheim, Charles Baker, Michael Wylie, and Pat Andreas. Honorary bearers were Leslie, Brett, and Gregg Carnell, Cheri Sapp, and Christi Props and all his friends. The family prefers memorials to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Assn., a children’s home, church or charity of your choice. All arrangements entrusted to Chavez Funeral Home of Fort Sumner.
