Kathryn J. Coffey

November 14, 1938 — June 21, 2002

Kathryn J. (Gibson) Coffey, age 63, of Logan, NM, a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend was called home to her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 21, 2002, while surrounded by her loving family. She joins her father, Willard O. Gibson who died Feb. 19, 1996 and other fondly remembered relatives. Kay was the first of four children born to Willard Omer Gibson and Glenna Fern Bell on November 14, 1938 at Clovis, NM. They mainly resided at House, NM. Kay was very active in her church Wesley Foundation. She accepted Jesus and was baptized at age 13 in the First Methodist Church of House, NM on August 31, 1952. While attending the House Public Schools she was a cheerleader and lettered in volleyball and basketball. She participated in F.H.A. – Future Homemakers of America and 4-H where she won the “Make It With Wool” contest and went on to Chicago for nationals. Kay was salutatorian of her graduating class from the House Public Schools on May 16, 1957. Upon graduation she attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, NM. There she was a member of the Home Economics Organization. Kay married O.B. Coffey at the House First Methodist Church on December 20, 1959 during her junior year of College. They became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Portales where they were active for over seven years. Their first daughter Debra was born October 5, 1960 during her senior year of college. Kay graduated May 31, 1962 with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education. Kay and O.B.’s second daughter Lisa was born December 24, 1963. Kay’s passion was to remain at home and be involved in every aspect of her families lives. She was a precious and loving wife and mother. Her home was filled with so much love through her creative talents of interior decorating, floral arrangements, painting, sewing and Christ life example. She was very involved with her girls at school as home room mother and parent class sponsor. Along with attending every extra curricular activity the girls had. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clovis for over 13 years. After the girls were away from home she did lots of traveling with O.B. They were an inseparable team with lots of endeavors. Also, becoming ever more involved in the First Presbyterian Church of Tucumcari for the last 20 years. She presided in several offices through the years including President for several terms and Vice-President of the Presbyterian Women. She also participated in PEO – Philanthropic Education Organization. Upon O.B.’s retirement in 1995 they made their home in Logan, NM A new love came into her life when her grandchildren were born. She felt they were precious treasures from God to be handled with the utmost love, compassion and kindness. There was nothing more comforting or healing than a Grandma’s hug and listening ear. Her listening came straight from her Christ like heart. She participated in all of her grandkids activities and spent hours afterwards with them praising, sharing and discussing how they had performed. Kay had a special impact on all of her family and friends of all ages. She was faithfully devoted to her endearing mother Glenna Gibson. Kay will be greatly missed by her loving family and by those who knew and loved her. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, June 24, 2002 at the First Baptist Church in Melrose, NM with Rev. John Mikow and Karol Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Melrose Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Leon Gibson, Lee Roy Coffey, Leonard Coffey, Herman Coffey, Leon Coffey, Dorman Austin, Borde Williams, Johnny Morsey, Arleigh Richmond, Don Heddins, August Martin, and Thurman Elder. Honorary bearers will be her nephews, cousins, and friends. There will be a family meal and fellowship at the Baptist Church following the services. The family prefers memorials in Kay’s memory to the NM Boys and Girls Ranches, P.O. Box 5000, Boys Ranch, New Mexico 87002-5000. Kay is survived by her devoted and caring husband of 42 years, O.B. Coffey of the family home in Logan, NM; her wonderful daughters, Debra Morsey and husband Johnny of Roswell, NM and Lisa Williams and husband Borde of Ruidoso, NM; her six precious grandchildren Haley and Ryan Williams, Justin, Jordan, Jerrick, and Jackson Morsey. She is also survived by her gracious mother, Glenna Gibson of Portales, NM; brother Leon Gibson and wife Linda of Carrizozo, NM; two sisters Alta Elder and husband Thurman of Portales, NM and Carolyn Martin and husband August of Aurora, CO; an aunt Erma Stallard of Fort Sumner, NM; uncle Don Gibson and wife Leana of Albuquerque, NM. Surviving in-laws, thought of as brothers and sisters are Lee Roy Coffey and wife Lola Mae of Melrose, NM; Leonard Coffey and wife Thelma of Clovis, NM; Ollie Mae Henry of Big Spring, TX; Herman Coffey and wife Thelma of Belen, NM; Leon Coffey and wife, Laura of Logan, NM; Louise Heddins and husband Don of Gruver, TX; and Wanda Richmond and husband Arleigh of Logan, NM. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home 804 North Fifth Street, Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
