Mavanee (Long) Bryan

Mavanee Bryan 81 a longtime Fort Sumner businesswoman died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at Farwell Convalescent Center, Farwell, Texas following a short illness. Mavanee was born December 7, 1920 in Plainview, Texas to the home of Richard Burnie Long and the former Elizabeth Bracken. She moved to Fort Sumner with her family in 1930 and attended Fort Sumner schools, graduating in 1938. Following graduation Mavanee worked as a waitress at area restaurants. During World War II she worked at a California Air Base. Mavanee married W.A. “Prunes” Bryan on July 5, 1947 in Fort Sumner. Together they owned and operated the Longhorn Bar in Fort Sumner for 51 years. They retired in 1998. Mavanee and W.A. were members of the Mounted Patrol in Fort Sumner for several years. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, sewing and having coffee with her friends. Mavanee was a loving and understanding mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years W.A. “Prunes” Bryan on September 7, 2001. Survivors include a daughter Janice Bryan of Dallas, Texas, a son Jerry Bryan and wife Tana of Sacramento, CA; three granddaughters Christina Wong of Dallas, TX, Kindra King of Sacramento, CA, Julie Wong of Dallas, TX; a grandson Jeremy Baird of Sacramento, CA, two great-grandchildren Ryan King and Kaelyn Baird both of Sacramento, CA.; two sisters Faye Thomas and husband Hank of Lakon, Illinois, and Nina Walraven of Fort Sumner, NM; three brothers Delbert Long of Fort Sumner; Gene Long of Decatur, Illinois; and Deral Long and wife Pat of Portales, NM. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 28, 2002 from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Sumner with Dan Craig officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Neuman Merritt, Gayle Long, David Bailey, Bill Long, Steve Long, and Gary Propps. Honorary bearers will be all her friends. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 10am to 6pm and Thursday from 10am until service time. The family prefers memorials in Mavanee Bryan’s memory to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 180, Fort Sumner, New Mexico 88119. All arrangements entrusted to Chavez Funeral Home, 804 North Fifth Street; Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
