Irene Potter

Irene Elizabeth Potter, 87 a resident of the Fort Sumner valley since 1928 died Thursday, June 21, 2001 at the Pecos Valley Care Center in Fort Sumner. Mrs. Potter was born November 12, 1913 in Southeast Guadalupe County to the home of John Oscar Snead and the former Mattie Alice Tadlock. She was reared on the family ranch in Guadalupe County. She moved to Fort Sumner in 1928 attended and graduated from Fort Sumner High School in 1932. She married Lee Roy Potter on June 25, 1933 in Fort Sumner. Irene taught school in Guadalupe County north of New Kirk, NM for one year. She later worked as a clerk at Franks Country Store for several years. Irene was a member of the Valley Quilting Club for many years, a member of the Fort Sumner Women’s Club and the Ranch Friends Club. She was a member of the Fort Sumner Church of Christ since 1933. Irene was preceded in death by her husband Lee Roy Potter on Nov. 22, 1984; two sisters Faye Tadlock and Lillie Davis; two brothers Joe Snead and Jim Snead. Survivors include two sons Jack Potter of Lubbock, TX; James W. Potter and wife Kathy of Bloomfield, NM; a daughter Jetty Jo Paul and husband Henry of Fort Sumner; a sister Lucille Johnson of Paradise, California; three grandchildren Joseph L. Paul and wife Barbara of Austin, Texas, Robert Potter and wife Daelena of Lexington, KY, and Gretchen Potter of Detroit Michigan; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Paul, Justin Paul, and Cayden Potter. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 23, 2001 from the Fort Sumner Church of Christ with Mr. Skip Clark and Mr. Perry Zumwalt officiating, burial followed in the Potter family plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery. The family prefers memorials to the Fort Sumner Cemetery Assn. Box 180, Fort Sumner, NM 88119. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner. (505) 355-2311.
