Emilia G. Maes

March 6, 1916 — January 17, 2000

Emilia G. Maes, 83 a lifelong De Baca County resident died Monday, January 17, 2000 in the De Baca General Hospital following an illness. Mrs. Maes was born March 6, 1916 in Yeso, NM to the home of Lucas Garza Sr. and the former Rosenda Montoya. She was reared and attended schools at Yeso. Emilia married Juan Maes at Yeso, NM in 1938. They made their home in Fort Sumner in 1942. Emilia was a homemaker, a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. She was a loving mother, and grandmother, who enjoyed embroidering, reading, and music. She was preceded in death by her husband Juan Maes in 1964; three sons Gilbert 1974; Pablo 1979; George 1983; step-son Pete Maes; her mother Rosenda Chavez 1983; a brother Lucas Garza in 1984; and a sister Inez Barela in 1991. Survivors include a son Dionicio Maes; three daughters Ricki and husband Vidal Gauna, Gloria and husband George Sena, Theresa Maes and Stash Sena all of Fort Sumner and Ellen and husband Dario Lopez of Clovis, NM. Two step-daughters Mary M. Baca of California; Maclovia Olivas of Albuquerque, NM and a step-son Juan Maes Jr. of Albuquerque. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, a brother Pablo Chavez of Fort Sumner and two sisters Annie Trujillo of Roswell, NM and Flora Garcia of Arlington, TX. Rosary services will be held at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 18, 2000 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the church, at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 19, 2000 with Father John Daniels officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10am to 5pm at the funeral home and Wednesday from 9am to 10am at the church. Pallbearers will be Aurelio Lopez, Tony Gauna Sr., Dario Lopez Jr., George Sena Sr., Fred Garza, Joaquin Garza, Tony Gauna Jr. Honorary bearers will be Vidal Gauna, Stash Sena, Pablo Chavez, Dario Lopez Sr., George Sena Jr., Tomas Sena, Abel Lopez, David Gauna, and Johnny Lopez. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner.
