Albert Riberia Mares

April 7, 1925 — April 21, 2000

Albert R. Mares, 76 a resident of Truth or Consequences, NM died at his home following a short illness. Mr. Mares was born April 7, 1925 to the home of Rito S. Mares and the former Catarina Riberia. He was reared and attended school at Fort Sumner. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II including a tour of duty in Italy. While in the service he competed as a welterweight boxer. Albert worked for the NM State Highway Department for 35 years. He traveled throughout the state as a bridge construction foreman. Following his retirement he made his home in T or C for the past 20 years. Albert was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War. He enjoyed dancing. Survivors include five brothers, Thomas, Chano, and twin brother Hilbert Mares all of Fort Sumner, NM; Robert Mares of Belen, NM and Ruben Mares of Albuquerque. Also surviving are six nieces and nephews. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Monday, April 24, 2000 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 25, 2000 from the church with Father Sotero A. Sena, celebrant of the Mass. Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Raymond Jo Samora, Robert Lopez, Pete Segura, Ricky Mares, Tito Gonzales, and Ray Mares. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home of Fort Sumner, NM (505) 355-2311.
