W.A. Bryan

W.A. “Prunes” Bryan, 90 a longtime Fort Sumner businessman died Friday, September 7, 2001 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, NM following an illness. Mr. Bryan was born December 23, 1910 in Brownfield, Texas to the home of Allen Jackson Bryan and the former Eva Louisa McDaniel. He was reared and graduated from Brownfield public schools. W.A. made his home at Hobbs, NM for a few years before moving to Fort Sumner where he ranched north of town from 1939 until 1946. W.A. married Mavanee Long on July 12, 1947 in Fort Sumner. W.A. purchased the Long Horn Bar and Package in 1946 and operated it until his retirement in 1998. He was a former member of Odd Fellows, and the Mounted Patrol. He enjoyed horseback riding. W.A. was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Riley Bryan, Durwood Bryan, and a sister Geneva Webb. Survivors include his wife of 54 years Mavanee Bryan of the home in Fort Sumner; a daughter Janice Bryan of Dallas, Texas; and a son Jerry Bryan and wife Tana of Sacramento, CA; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother Ben Bryan and his wife Sara of Odessa, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 11, 2001 from the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Sumner with Mr. Dan Craig officiating. Burial will follow in the Bryan family Plot, Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ernie Sutter, Knox Cortese, Andy Andreas, David Bailey, Cecil West, and Frank McRee. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner. Visitation hours will be Monday from 10AM to 6PM and Tuesday from 10AM until service time.
