Johnny Chavez, 44 of Fort Sumner, NM died Thursday, September 13, 2001 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Clovis, NM. Johnny was born April 16, 1957 in Santa Rosa, NM to the home of Audon Lucero Jr. and Maria Delia Chavez. Johnny was raised and attended schools in Fort Sumner. Johnny worked for many years with various construction companies throughout New Mexico. Johnny married the former Pauline Aragon on November 27, 2000 in Fort Sumner, NM. Johnny was a loving husband, son, father, and grandfather. He loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Johnny was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. He is preceded in death by his father, Audon Lucero Jr., his paternal grandfather, Audon Lucero Sr. and a sister Rosie Gutierrez. Survivors include his wife Pauline Chavez of the family home in Fort Sumner; two sons, Johnny Chavez Jr, and Carlos Chavez both of Clinton, Ok; four step daughters, Joline Chaparro and husband George of Clovis, NM, Judy Urioste of Fort Sumner, Helen Whitman of Michigan and Fiona Osage of Oklahoma, a stepson Peter Osage of Ft.Sumner, his Mother Delia Caballero and husband Manuel, his grandmother Rosa Lucero; two brothers Felix Chavez and wife Isabel, Carlos Chavez and wife Lucille; and one sister Patsy Kenyon and husband Les all of Fort Sumner. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 PM Sunday, September 16, 2001 from St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Funeral mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the Church at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, September 17, 2001 with Father Stephen Schultz, Celebrant of the Mass. Burial will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery. Pallbearers will be George Lucero, Manuel Lucero, Tony Lucero, Sandy Martinez, Louis Gutierrez and Sam Cortese. Visitation will be held Sunday from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Chavez Funeral Home, 804 North Fifth Street; Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
