Rickey D. Cones, 46 of Fort Sumner, NM died Sunday, February 25, 2001 in a motorcycle accident in the Fort Sumner valley. Rickey was born April 1, 1954 in Fort Sumner to the home of Clarence E. Cones and Velma Louise McGuffin. He was reared and attended school at Fort Sumner, graduating in 1972. While attending school he worked at the Flying Twins Truck stop and later worked commercial wheat harvesting. Rickey also worked for Dension Machine Shop in Fort Sumner and Ranchers Well Supply. Rickey married Denise Turner on June 18, 1976 in Fort Sumner. He began working for Turner Drilling Company in 1975 and eventually purchased the business in 1986, renaming the company Cones Drilling. Rickey was a loving husband and father; he enjoyed the time he spent with his family. He loved to ride motorbikes with his son. He was both a dad and best friend. Rickey was instrumental in the formation of the Billy The Kid Motocross Association. He spent many hours building the motocross track. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, boating and jet skiing with his family. He was preceded in death by his mother Velma Louise Cones on August 9, 1997. Survivors include his wife Denise Cones; daughter Dawna Cones, son Jerry D. Cones of the family home in Fort Sumner; his father Clarence Cones; paternal grandfather Johnny Cones of Fort Sumner; two brothers Roy Lee Cones of Clovis; Mickey Cones and wife Sheryl of Fort Sumner; two sisters Janice Cones of Sedalia, Missouri; Judy Garcia and husband Javier of Grand Prairie, Texas; and his mother and father-in-law Jim and Alice Turner of Fort Sumner. Also surviving are eight nieces, one nephew, along with many other relatives and a host friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 1, 2001 from the First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner with Rev. Coy Brewer and Rev. Jim Peabody officiating, Burial will follow at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Stephen Long, Lyle Russ, Phil Bidegain, Joe Steele, Hershel Dixon, Randy Kelley, Barry Allen, Albert Sena, Robert Pennington, and Timmy Thomson. Honorary Bearers will include the Billy the Kid Motocross Association members including Jack Vick, George Sena, Jeff Vick, Jeff Boulware, Wesley Wall, Bob Vilandry and all his many friends. Visitation will be 10AM to 6PM Wednesday at the funeral home. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 804 N. Fifth Street; Fort Sumner, New Mexico. (505) 355-2311
