Amelia Gauna Romo

Amelia Isabel Romo, 68 a longtime Vaughn, NM educator died suddenly Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. Amelia was born November 5, 1932 in Vaughn, NM to the home of Procopio and Macedonia (Trujillo) Gauna. Amelia was Sister Rose Anita in the order of St. Joseph Convent at Framingham, MA for five years including two years teaching at Cristo Rey Catholic School in Santa Fe. Upon leaving the order Amelia graduated with an education degree from St. Joseph’s College and taught at Holy Ghost School in Albuquerque and at Vaughn Public schools. Amelia married Tony Romo on June 24, 1972 in Vaughn, NM. She retired after 30 years as an elementary school teacher. Amelia was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vaughn where she served as a Lector, Mayordomo and was a member of the Church Choir. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Rejino Gauna and Willie Gauna and a sister Annie Tapia. She is survived by her loving husband and companion of 29 years, Tony Romo; a son, and the apple of her eye, Michael Romo, wife Sherry and granddaughter Isabelle Maria of Tome, NM. Also surviving is a brother Adolph Gauna and wife Erma of Vaughn; two sisters Rebecca Gauna of Vaughn and Esther (Gauna) Chavez and husband Carlos of Albuquerque; aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren and friends. Rosary services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Sunday, April 1, 2001 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vaughn, NM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from the church at 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 2, 2001 with Father Christopher Pieroni officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Vaughn. Pallbearers will be nephews, Patrick Chavez, David Andrew Sanchez, Steve Sanchez Jr., William Gauna, Tino Ortiz, and Phillip Romo. Visitation will be begin at 5:00 P.M. on Sunday at the church. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 804 N. Fifth Street; Fort Sumner, New Mexico. (505) 355-2311.
