Andy Madrid

Jose Andres “Andy” Madrid, 72, passed away on August 3, 2026, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Andy was born on October 11, 1953, in Vaughn, New Mexico, to Narciso and Elena (Dodge) Madrid.

Andy was born and raised on his family’s farm and ranch in Puerto de Luna, New Mexico, a place that remained close to his heart throughout his life. His roots in Puerto de Luna ran deep, with generations of his family calling the community home. In retirement, Andy continued farming and ranching the family land alongside his siblings, children, and grandchildren, carrying on a way of life and traditions that meant a great deal to him.

Andy dedicated much of his life to public service and to the people of Guadalupe County. He began his career in law enforcement, serving as Undersheriff and Sheriff of Guadalupe County. He later served as a Park Ranger and Boating Officer at Santa Rosa Lake State Park before beginning a nearly 20-year career as a Juvenile Probation and Parole Officer. In that role, he served young people and families throughout Guadalupe County and communities across northeastern New Mexico.

In 2003, Andy became Guadalupe County Manager, serving in that role until 2012. Never one to simply sit behind a desk, Andy took a hands-on approach to serving the county. During his tenure, he was involved in numerous projects that strengthened communities throughout Guadalupe County, including improvements to senior centers, fire departments, community facilities and water systems; restoration of the historic Guadalupe County Courthouse; development of facilities for the Sheriff’s Office and other county services; and efforts associated with the development of Guadalupe County Hospital and dental services.

Andy’s service to his community extended well beyond his professional career. He served eight years on the Santa Rosa Consolidated Schools Board of Education and also served on the Luna Community College Board. Over the years, he gave his time and leadership to numerous organizations, including the New Mexico County Managers Association, Guadalupe County DWI Council, New Mexico Acequia Commission, Puerto de Luna Mutual Domestic Water Association and New Mexico Citizens Review Board. He was also one of the original members who helped establish the local fire department and later served as Assistant Fire Chief.

Perhaps one of the greatest examples of Andy’s connection to his home was his nearly 50 years of involvement with the East Puerto de Luna Acequia. Farming, ranching, caring for the land and preserving the traditions passed down through generations were not simply things Andy did; they were an important part of who he was.

Despite his many years of public service and his accomplishments throughout Guadalupe County, Andy’s greatest love was his family. He shared 46 years of marriage with his wife, Silvia (Lopez) Madrid. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and especially enjoyed hosting family and bringing everyone together. Andy also loved to joke with people, and his sense of humor was a familiar part of his personality to those who knew him.

And when he wasn't spending time with family or tending to the ranch, Andy could often be found cheering for his beloved San Francisco 49ers.

Andy is survived by his wife, Silvia; his children, Frank (Brandy) Madrid, Martin (Francisca) Madrid, Kathy Aragon and Andrea Madrid; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Patsy Madrid, Lorraine Madrid, Toni Baca and Gloria Madrid.

Andy shared a particularly special bond with his granddaughter Bianca, Andrea’s daughter, whom he helped raise and loved as one of his own children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Narciso and Elena (Dodge) Madrid; his brothers, Narciso Jr., Frank and Ernesto Madrid; and his mother-in-law, Vicky Lopez.

Visitation for family and friends will be Monday, September 7, 2026 from 2-4PM at Chavez Funeral Home in Santa Rosa.

Recitation of The Most Holy Rosary will take place at Nuestra Señora Del Refugio Catholic Church in Puerto De Luna, NM at 6PM on Monday, September 7, 2026.

The Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11AM, Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at Nuestra Señora Del Refugio Catholic Church, with Father Sotero Sena celebrating the service.

Interment will follow at Nuestra Señora Del Refugio Cemetery with Ryan Madrid, Josh Madrid, Martin Madrid Jr., Andres Madrid, Daniel Madrid, Matias Garcia, AJ Romo and Ethan Patterson serving as Pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers are Candelario Lopez, Salvador Lopez, Delfinio Montano, Hector Puchi, George Dodge, Manuel Dodge, Richard Chavez, Michael Chavez and Glenn Gonzales.

Andy leaves behind a lifetime of service, a deep connection to the land and community that raised him, and, most importantly, a family he loved deeply. His impact can be seen not only in the projects and communities he helped build, but in the generations of family who will carry his memory forward.
