Benny Marquez, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2025, in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, at the age of 84. Born on October 16, 1940, in Guadalupe County, New Mexico, Benny was a man whose life was defined by tenacity, spirit, and unwavering devotion to family and faith.
A proud graduate of Santa Rosa High School, Benny’s journey through life began in the vast, open spaces of ranches, where he cultivated a profound love for the land and hard work. This connection led him to a fulfilling career as a commercial truck driver, a role that allowed him to traverse many miles while supporting his family. His loyalty to his profession was only overshadowed by his commitment to his loved ones.
Benny's dedication to his country was resolute, having served honorably in the United States Army. He embodied the values of service and community, as evidenced by his proud membership in the American Legion and AMVETS. His faith was further illuminated by his lifelong devotion as a Catholic, finding strength and purpose within the embrace of his spirituality.
Though Benny’s life was filled with challenges, he found joy in the simpler pleasures that life had to offer. His love for fishing brought him solace and peace, while his puppy provided companionship on the tranquil afternoons. He reveled in the affectionate company of his children and took immense pride in the laughter and liveliness of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Benny is remembered fondly by his children: Joann (Mario) Martinez of Harrisonburg, VA; Sharon (Jay) Hobbs of Santa Rosa, NM; Louie (Susan) Marquez of Santa Rosa, NM; Michael (Cindy) Marquez of Marengo, OH; Theresa (Jorge) Flores of Edgewood, NM; Alfred Marquez of Peña Blanca, NM; and Larry (Ann) Marquez of Santa Rosa, NM, brother Eddie (Margaret) Marquez of Michigan. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of love that extends to his 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, in addition to a multitude of family members and friends whose lives he touched with warmth and generosity.
Benny is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Antonio and Mary Amalia Marquez; his daughter, Melanie Marquez; his grandson, Christopher Marquez; as well as his dear brother, Tony "JoJo" Marquez, and sisters, Rita Marquez and Lucy Chavez. Their memories will now shine brightly in his everlasting spirit.
His family and friends will gather to celebrate his life with a viewing on October 6, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a service at Chavez Funeral Home in Santa Rosa, NM, allowing all who knew him to pay their respects and share in the remembrance of this remarkable man.
