Doug McCloy

Douglas Carson McCloy, 75, of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, passed away peacefully at his home on June 9, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Doug was born on August 8, 1950, in Amarillo, Texas, to Samuel and Mary Nan Gillispie McCloy. He spent his childhood in Rosebud, New Mexico, and Morse, Texas. A 1968 graduate of Morse High School, Doug continued his education at South Plains College and later at Texas Tech University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972. During his college years, he was a bull rider on the rodeo teams at both SPC and TTU.

On October 8, 1971, Doug married the love of his life, Judy Kay Clements, in Lubbock, Texas. Together the two moved to Morse, Texas, where Doug worked at the family ranch and feedlot operation. Throughout his career, he was employed by Caprock Feedlot, Excel Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, and Texas Range Mineral. In September 2003, Doug and Judy purchased a ranch and made Fort Sumner their home.

Doug was never happier than when he was horseback, working cattle, and caring for the land he loved. He took great pride in raising registered Angus cattle and enjoyed every detail of the registration process. Beyond ranching, Doug was a leather craftsman, a skill he passed down to his son.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Nan McCloy.

Doug is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy McCloy of the family home in Fort Sumner; his sons Dan (Terri) McCloy of Fort Sumner and Scott (Nina) McCloy of White Rock, New Mexico; and his beloved grandchildren, Hayden Modisette of Stratford, Texas, Mesa Modisette of Logan, New Mexico, and Addie and Lucas McCloy of White Rock, New Mexico. Also cherishing his memory are his brothers, Allen (Janice) McCloy of Morse, Texas, Bill (Georgia) McCloy of Licking, Missouri, and Mark (Annette) McCloy of Tatum, New Mexico; his sister, Nanelle (Charlie) Kiser of Stinnett, Texas; brothers-in-law Bob Clements of Odessa, Texas, Roy (Tricia) Clements of Boerne, Texas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, July 11, 2026 at Fellowship Methodist Church in Fort Sumner, NM with Ben Clements officiating.
