Edward C. Barthel, age 71 years, a resident of Vienna, Illinois passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, April 27, 2025, at 2:05 P.M. at Deaconess Illinois – Union County Hospital in Anna, Illinois. 

Edward was born April 21, 1954 in Freeport, Illinois. He was the son of Edward C. and Kathryn D. (Pax) Barthel. 

Survivors include: his siblings – Kathy (Jon Wright) Mickle, Anthony C. (Sharon) Barthel and Eugene (Donna) Barthel; a host of nieces and nephews, as well as his Glenbrook family. 

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by: 3 sisters – Joann Barthell, Judith Ann Jones, and Sandy Sollinger; a brother – James Henry Barthel; and 3 infant brothers. 

Edward was a 1975 graduate of the DeKalb County Special Education program. Edward is remembered for his kind heart, warm smile and deep love for life’s simple joys. He worked for many years at the MAP training center in Karnak, Illinois, where he built lasting friendships and found great pride in his work. 

He had a passion for animals, often finding comfort and joy in their companionship. He also loved music, movies, and spending time talking and laughing with his friends and family. His gentle spirit, friendly conversations and vibrant stories will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. 

Edward’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched with his kindness and warmth. 

Services are pending. Interment will be in the Fort Sumner Cemetery in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico. For those who wish, memorials may be made to an animal shelter of the donor’s choosing in recognition of Edward’s great love of animals. 

Arrangements have been entrusted to Bailey Funeral home in Vienna, Illinois and Chavez Funeral Home in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
