Nick Lucero, 72 of Fort Sumner, NM passed away Sunday, February 14, 2021 at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas following an illness. He was born November 19, 1948 in Fort Sumner the son of Alfredo and Martina Garcia Lucero. Nick grew up in Fort Sumner where he attended school. Following graduation from high school in 1967, Nick attended ENMU Roswell where he received an Associate Degree in 1969. Nick worked as a seismograph operator, technician and foreman for various oil companies throughout the United States, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Columbia for over 20 years, retiring in 1989. Nick Married Dora Sena on September 19, 1986 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. Nick returned to Fort Sumner where he purchased a second farm in the Fort Sumner valley and began his farming career. Nick continued working and growing his farm business with his son at his side. He was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner. He enjoyed living in the valley, working on vehicles and farm equipment, being around his family and talking with his many friends around Fort Sumner. Nick is preceded in death by his father Alfredo Lucero, his mother Martina G. Lucero, a brother Agapito Lucero, and an uncle Rumaldo Garcia. Survivors include a daughter Veronica Lucero, a son Nicolas F. Lucero, and the mother of his children and longtime caregiver, Dora Lucero all of Fort Sumner, also surviving are his siblings, three brothers Gabriel Lucero (Sis) of Grand Junction, CO Ruben Lucero of Grand Junction, CO, Simon Lucero of Fort Sumner, three sisters, Jean Boughton of Albuquerque, Mary Lucero and Theresa Lucero both of Fort Sumner, his uncle Jake Lucero (Josephine) of Fort Sumner, an aunt Rebecca Lopez of Fort Sumner, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic Social Distancing guidelines, services will be private and limited to the immediate family. We kindly ask that you keep Nick and his family in your prayers. You may leave a tribute, share a favorite memory, or sign the online guestbook. Visitation hours were held at the Chavez Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, February 22, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. A funeral Mass was held at 10:00am Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at St Anthony Catholic Church, graveside interment service followed at St. Anthony Cemetery in Fort Sumner, Father Sotero A. Sena officiated. Pallbearers included Gabriel Lucero, Danny Garcia, Jesse Marshall, Bryan Marshall, Jamie Garcia, Freddie Pena, and Michael Garcia. All arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home, 830 N. Fifth Street, Fort Sumner, New Mexico. (575) 355-2311.
