Peter Douglas Ackerman, better known as Doug, passed away at his home on May 23, 2026. Doug was born on August 9, 1953, in Quinter, Kansas, and grew up in western Kansas, graduating from high school in Garden City. He went on to attend vocational school in Beloit, where he trained as a diesel mechanic. He later worked in construction and specialized in brick, block, and stone, where he became an artist in the craft.
Some of Doug’s happiest years were spent working as a ranch hand in Grandy, Colorado— a job that suited him perfectly and brought him real joy. He also guided game hunts high in the mountains, where he felt most at home. Those who knew him often said he was a mountain man born a century too late.
Later in life, he moved to Amarillo, Texas, where he cared for his parents during their declining health. Following their passing, Doug made his home in Tucumcari, New Mexico, where he became a valued member of the community.
He enjoyed cooking and experimenting with new recipes, often inspired by the bargains he found at the local market. He had a deep love for his country, a habit of collecting things that caught his eye, and a natural talent for fixing just about anything with his hands.
Doug will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by many family members and friends who will carry his memory forward. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Janese Ackerman.
Mr. Ackerman's care has been entrusted to Chavez Funeral Home of Santa Rosa, NM.
