Sophie Julia Howe

Sophie Julia Howe, née Ortega, passed away peacefully at her home on April 5, 2026, following an illness. Born on September 16, 1937, in Santa Rosa, Sophie was a devoted homemaker whose life was deeply rooted in the community where she was born and raised, attending school there and nurturing her family with love and care.

Throughout her life, Sophie found joy in simple and meaningful pleasures. She cherished spending time with her family above all else, a testament to her warm and generous spirit. Her love for crossword puzzles, dancing, and the vibrant sounds of New Mexico music brought her much happiness, as did her talent and enthusiasm for cooking, which she shared with those around her.

Sophie is survived by her beloved children: Guadalupe Thomas Howe and Jessica of Vaughn, NM; Jeanette Howe and Christian, Joel Howe, Lawrence Howe—all of Santa Rosa; Leonard Howe (Susan) of Clovis, NM; and Albert Ortega (Lisa) of Santa Rosa. She also leaves behind her sister, Fern Romero and Johnny of Santa Rosa, along with numerous nephews, nieces, family members, and friends who were touched by her kindness and grace.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Guadalupe and Elvira Ortega, and by her infant son Albert Howe. Sophie also mourned the loss of her son Johnny Ortega, daughter Juliette Howe, grandson Jovon Solomon, great-grandson Luciano Howe, and her sister Doris Tapia and her husband Tomas Tapia.

Services are pending and will be announced when finalized.
